Ce roman raconte les conditions de vie dans les tranchées : l'attente, les combats, la boue, le froid, la faim, la peur, la mort. Les soldats prennent peu à peu conscience de l'inhumanité de la guerre, décidée par des hommes politiques éloignés du front.
